TAMIU Theatre Presents Sartre’s ‘No Exit’ This Weekend

The seminal French existentialist play “No Exit,” by Jean-Paul Sartre, will be presented by Texas A&M International University’s student TAMIU Theatre this weekend, June 29-30 and July 1at  TAMIU’s Sam Johnson Experimental Theater.

Admission is free of charge and open to all. Showtimes are at 7:30 p.m. for both Friday and Saturday presentations, and 3 p.m. for the final Sunday showing.

TAMIU assistant professional Dr. Gilberto Martinez, Jr.,  who will direct the production, said it represents an ongoing student summer initiative.

“While this is not our first summer theatre production,  it  is our first production associated with our revamped History and Criticism course. This summer, our students are studying Sartre’s play, so in addition to reading and discussing,  they are also watching the production. TAMIU Theatre’s Summer Plays will choose different plays for our students to produce and critique. We hope to choose a different classical play or scenes from plays every summer,” Dr. Martinez said.

The four-member cast includes Jaime Pablo Felix Torres Gonzales, Miguel Castillon, Jessica Gutierrez and Karis Martinez.

Sartre’s play revolves around three characters who find themselves waiting in a mysterious room. It is considered a depiction of the afterlife, with the three characters apparently punished for all eternity by being locked together in the room.  The play is well-known to be the source of Sartre's  famed,  but often misunderstood saying: "L'enfer, c'est les autres" or "Hell is other people.”  Since bowing in 1946, it has become a benchmark in modern theatre and is performed worldwide in countless languages.
