Office of the University Registrar

This chapter provides education and training opportunities to eligible dependents of certain veterans. It offers up to 45 months of education benefits, which may be used for degree and certificate programs, apprenticeship, and on-the-job training.

To be eligible, you must be the son, daughter, or spouse of:

• A veteran who died or is permanently and totally disabled as the result of a service-connected disability. The disability must arise out of active service in the Armed Forces.
• A veteran who died from any cause while such service-connected disability was in existence
• A servicemember missing in action or captured in the line of duty by a hostile force
• A servicemember forcibly detained or interned in the line of duty by a foreign government or power
• A servicemember who is hospitalized or receiving outpatient treatment for a service-connected permanent and total disability and is likely to be discharged for that disability.

Checklist for Texas A&M International University

1. Apply and be accepted to the university
2. Complete the VA Application (VA Form 22-5490)
3. Present proper documents to the VA Assistant (located in KL168) that shows proof of being the spouse or son/daughter of the veteran (i.e., marriage license, birth certificate)
4. Complete and submit the "Request for Veteran Certification" form at the Office of the University Registrar.

Please note: As part of our institutional policy, students are not certified until after the 12th class day for Fall and Spring semesters and after the 4th class day for the Summer sessions.

Additional Information

Benefits are paid between the 1st and 5th of each month for the previous month. Direct deposit is not yet available for Chapter 35.
