The words of Miguel A. Conchas’ father, “Hijo, la educación y tu palabra son cosas que nadie
en este mundo te puede quitar,’’ still echo in his head as if they had been uttered yesterday. His
father’s advice that education and being true to your word are things that no one can take from
you has impacted Conchas deeply. His mother was determined that her children attend schools
in the U.S., but not knowing English proved difficult and did not make school an enjoyable
experience. Because of his personal experience, Conchas is a firm believer in a structured
bilingual education program.
Knowing the value of higher education, he earned a bachelor’s degree which he followed with a master’s degree from TAMIU. He then began a career in management and his professional life
was guided by the wisdom of several mentors.
His love of this city has also influenced his career. In 1986, he was named director of the
Laredo Convention and Visitors Bureau and, in 1992, he took the helm of the Laredo Chamber of Commerce. While at the Chamber, he was invited to participate in a group that met with former Vice President Al Gore to promote the enactment of NAFTA.
