Voices in the Monte Writers Series

The writers series is part of the ongoing celebration of the Smithsonian Institute’s Exhibition, “Our Journeys/ Our Stories,” at the TAMIU Student Center through May 12, 2007. The Smithsonian’s Exhibition, its national tour and related programs are made possible by Ford Motor Company Fund. Ford Motor Company Fund has also provided support for its presentation in Laredo and for related educational programs like “The Voices in the Monte Writers Series.”
The featured writer was Dagoberto Gilb, who was born and raised in Los Angeles but spent many years in El Paso, Texas. Gilb spent most of his adult years as a construction worker and journeyman high-rise carpenter with the United Brotherhood of Carpenters. He now lives in Austin, Texas, and teaches in the MFA program at Texas State University in San Marcos.
His books include “Gritos,” “Woodcuts of Women,” “The Last Known Residence of Mickey Acuna,” “The Magic of Blood.”

Smithsonian Traveling Exhibit Gala

“Our Journeys/Our Stories: Portraits of Latino Achievement” presents narratives and portraits of 24 individuals and one extended family that provide a look at the experiences of U.S. Latinos who have made a notable mark throughout the country.
The guests and honorees enjoyed the gala with much gusto that this event was one night to remember. They celebrated with lively music and performances from the TAMIU International Mariachi and the Music Department’s Ballet Folklorico.
Along with the national tour, 45 TAMIU alumni are honored for their significant work in Laredo and surrounding areas. The exhibit entitled Picture our Lives-Portraits of TAMIU Alumni Achievements is being displayed alongside the Smithsonian exhibit.
The exhibition is open to the public and free of charge.
