TAMIU to Offer Texas Certified Public Manager Program this Fall

Texas A&M International University’s (TAMIU) Office of Continuing Education will present the  Texas Certified Public Manager® Program  (CPM) to the public in the Fall 2024.

Registration opens in July 2024 with the first class scheduled Saturday, September 21, 2024.

TAMIU created the CPM Program with Texas State University in 2019.  The TAMIU program began in Summer 2022.  To date, 30 students have graduated from the program through a partnership with the City of Laredo.

Three class cohorts are currently underway in partnerships with the City of Laredo and the County of Webb.  The program’s mission is focused on training public and nonprofit managers in the ethical values and technical competencies associated with outstanding public service.

The CPM Program is a nationally accredited comprehensive statewide management development program specifically for managers in federal, state, and local government, and for managers in the not-for-profit sector. Its primary goal is to improve the performance of public and not-for-profit sector administrators and the organizational performance of state, local, and federal government.

It is a comprehensive seven-track sequence of study that guides acquiring and applying best practices and theory to management behaviors and strategies using prescribed sets of professional standards. The curriculum provides foundational theory to apply to practical problems that participants, their agencies/departments, or communities may face.

Those who complete the program earn a national trademark designation of CPM (Certified Public Manager®) accredited by the National Certified Public Manager (CPM).  Entire program cost is $4,865.00.

All CPM programs are sponsored and operated by a public sector agency or university in a state or other political jurisdiction.

Susan Foster, TAMIU director of Continuing Education, said the Certified Public Manager® Program offers multiple benefits for participants and their respective agencies.

She outlined additional benefits for both:

For Employees: enhance personal leadership strengths for work and personal life; broaden intergovernmental networks and communication; increase personal awareness and effectiveness; evaluate and implement innovative solutions; become a leader in the promotion of quality in public services; take advantage of competency-based learning with immediate workplace application, and eligibility for membership in the American Academy of Certified Public Managers®.

For Employers: use succession planning to fill upcoming vacancies; bring staff up to speed quickly, saving time and money; create promotional opportunities, building morale; use experience to tackle a long-term project or as part of an employee development and mentoring plan; champion a capstone project to improve effectiveness, efficiency or saving money; obtain national recognition and accomplishment, and implement nationally recognized process improvement theory and practices endorsed by government and industry.
