A Letter from TAMIU President Dr. Pablo Arenaz

Dear TAMIU 2020 Graduate/Candidate for Graduation:

Congratulations from Texas A&M International University. Your commitment and perseverance in the face of remarkable adversity inspires us all.

The safety and well-being of your family, friends and loved-ones remains our top priority.  As I cautioned in April when we announced our intent to proceed with an August Commencement …we would only be able to do so respective of the public health situation, safety and well-being of all.

In light of the recent spike in COVID-19 cases in the City, continuing closure of the Sames Auto Arena and our City’s prohibitions on gatherings of more than six people, the University regretfully has no choice but to cancel our planned August 13, 2020  Commencement Ceremony.

We know this is a source of profound disappointment, and we share that disappointment. As members of the University’s historic 50th Anniversary Class of 2020, you endured remarkable challenges in order to complete your degree. You did so with grit and determination.  You persevered.

As you know from my previous message, our Commencement ceremonies are a tremendous source of pride for all of us at TAMIU.  Personally, Graduation Day is my favorite day of the year.  As faculty and administrators, we all celebrate each graduate’s accomplishment as they cross our graduation stage. It marks a life milestone for our graduates and the beginnings of hundreds of remarkable and impactful futures. Yours is one.

While we are not able to host the ceremony you so richly deserve, your achievement is no less of a milestone.  Our campus remains your home, and we encourage you to return and celebrate your accomplishment with on-campus photography.

The  campus is closed to the general public, but we welcome you to return, respecting social distancing and face-covering mandates in place, to record your milestone achievement here -- on your campus. Groups of no more than six can use various outdoor campus areas for these purposes, August 7 - 16 from 8 a.m. – 8 p.m. daily.

During this time, the campus quad and front lawn will feature special adornments in your honor, and the Trailblazer Tower will ring in commemoration of your achievement on the quarter hour.  University police will patrol the campus and ensure guidelines are respected for the safety of all.

While returning to your campus for a commemorative photograph is a modest substitute, we believe it can be a powerful opportunity to celebrate your success with those you love.  We all wish you the very best as you move forward.

Godspeed, health, safety and the brightest possible future!

Dr. Pablo Arenaz,
President
