PRE-DEPARTURE ORIENTATION

All study abroad students are required to attend a mandatory pre-departure orientation meeting.  These meetings are scheduled on a Saturday, so that parents also have an opportunity to attend all or part of the pre-departure orientation.  An invitation letter is mailed out to all parents prior to the meeting, with the schedule and topics attached.

Why a pre-departure orientation meeting?  Many details go into participating in a study abroad program.  During the meeting we review topics that concern most students and family members, namely adjustment to the host culture and country, travel concerns, health and safety, and what to do in case of an emergency.

Some of the preventive measures our Office takes registration of US citizens with the US embassy or consulate in the study abroad country.  As well, students receive emergency contact information, which includes a phone number the the University's Police Department.  This phone number is operational 24/7, and students may call collect in case of emergency.  Students are also required to complete a Waiver and Liability Package, which details their travel arrangements, passport information, and other details.

We strive to make the student's study abroad experience to be educational, life-enriching, and most of all, as safe as possible.
