The holiday season will take on a new twinkle Monday, Dec. 4 as Texas A&M; International University hosts its first Holiday Lighting Ceremony on the South Plaza at 5:30 p.m.

Dr. Leo Sayavedra, TAMIU President, said the event offers students, faculty, staff and the community at large a new tradition for the holidays.

"The holidays are a joyous time of the year that bring all together in celebration of the season and anticipation of a new year to come. We hope that the Holiday Lighting Ceremony will offer TAMIU students, faculty, staff and the community we serve a chance to ring in the holidays in a special way, "said Dr. Sayavedra.

The Holiday Lighting Ceremony will include an opportunity to share in the sounds of the season with holiday carols and special refreshments. The highlight of the event will be the lighting of the University's Holiday Tree in the South Plaza facing the Sue and Radcliffe Killam Library.

Sayavedra said the event has been made possible with the generous support of Laredo businesses who have helped to underwrite the event.

"We especially want to acknowledge the donation of the tree by Gentry's Garden Center and the holiday lights provided by Michael's and Sam's, "said Dr. Sayavedra.

"We encourage all Laredoans to come and join us to sing and ring in the season and help us light up a new tradition, " said Dr. Sayavedra.

The event is being coordinated by the Office for Advancement and External Affairs at TAMIU under the direction of Dr. Janet Black, Vice President for Advancement and External Affairs.
