Candidates for county offices, State Senate, and US House of Representatives are scheduled to participate in the Texas A&M International University Political Science Association (PSA) Candidate's Debate on Thursday, February 22 at 6:00 p.m. in Bullock Hall Room 101.

Scheduled to participate in the Debate are: Allen Rindfuss, candidate for US House of Representatives; Jim Whitworth and Judith Zaffirini, candidates for Texas State Senate, District 21; Ana Laura Ramirez, Candidate for District Attorney, 49th Judicial District; Cynthia Zuniga Puig, candidate for County Attorney, County of Webb; and Juan Garza, Juan R. Gutierrez, E.J. Laurel, and Albino Walker, candidates for Sheriff, Webb County.

TAMIU Assistant Professor of Political Science and PSA Faculty Advisor Dr. Aaron Knight hopes the Debate will encourage students and community members to increase their political awareness.

"The TAMIU Political Science Association organized the Debate in order to provide citizens with an opportunity to hear candidates express their views," said Dr. Knight.

The public is invited to attend the PSA sponsored Debate. Large campaign signs and placards will not be allowed inside Bullock Hall.

The Debate will begin with candidates for US House of Representatives, followed by candidates for Texas State Senate, District 21, District Attorney, 49th Judicial District; Webb County Attorney; and Webb County Sheriff.

In races where only one candidate is present, that candidate will be allowed to make one uninterrupted six-minute speech.

For each race where more than one candidate is present, each candidate will make a one-minute opening statement. A member of the questioning panel will then present the candidates with one question and each candidate will be allowed a one and one-half minute response. Each candidate will also give a one minute closing statement.

Moderator will be KVTV News Anchor Jim Poston. Panelists will be Jesse Guillen, PSA Vice President; Dr. Nasser Momayezi, Associate Professor of Political Science and Chair of the Department of Criminal Justice, History, and Political Science; and Rick Pauza, Reporter with The Laredo Morning Times.
