Late applications for admission into Texas A&M International University's 11th Annual Laredo Prefreshman Engineering Program (PREP) will be accepted through April 5, announced PREP Program Director Dr. Julio F. Madrigal.

Late applications will be considered only if opening are available. Area middle and high school students in Jim Hogg, Webb, and Zapata counties are eligible to apply.

Applications are available from the TAMIU PREP Program offices, located in the Sue and Radcliffe Killam Library-Administration Building Room 426 West. Applications are also available from middle and high school counselors, and area math and science instructors.

Completed applications for first-year students must include the application and a supplemental information form, a 100-200 word essay which explains the student's desire to participate in the program, two nomination forms or letters of recommendation from mathematics or science teacher, latest official school transcript and grade report, and a Grade Point Average (GPA) computation provided by a counselor.

The summer program is scheduled to operate from June 3 to July 26. Now in its 11th year, the PREP program provides high-ability local and area high school students with exposure to college-level engineering and science studies.

One program goal is increasing the number of underrepresented minorities and women in mathematics, science and engineering, however, the Laredo PREP will not discriminate against any applicant on the basis of race, creed, religion, political belief, sex, color, age, handicap, or national origin.

Students selected attend the program on a daily basis, Monday - Friday, from 8:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. at TAMIU's new state-of-the-art north Laredo campus.

No tuition or academic fees are assessed, but students must provide their own transportation, meals, and school supplies such as notebooks, paper, pencils, and computer diskettes. Students must also provide some field trip expenses.

Courses available for student study include logic, pre-engineering, computers, physics, problem-solving, mathematics. SAT preparation, research and study, and career orientation.

For more information on the Laredo PREP Program, please call Dr. Madrigal at 326-2621 or 326-2475.
