Texas A&M; International University students planning to pursue a career in health services or a health-related degree program will be able to secure their educational pursuits thanks to the generosity of a Laredo family.

The Carroll E. Summers Jr. Family has provided the University with a Gift of $6,000 to be known as the Carroll E. Summers III Memorial Scholarship in memory of their son.

The first installment of $1,500 of the four-year gift was presented by Family members Shelley Summers Gutierrez, Carroll E. Summers and Robert H. Summers in ceremonies at the University's Great Room in the Sue and Radcliffe Killam Library.

"We are happy to be able to provide Texas' newest four-year University with this Scholarship and hope that others will join in supporting Texas A&M; International University," said Carroll E. Summers.

Interim President Jose Garcia said the support of the Summers Family is most appreciated.

"Our University has received generous support from the State of Texas in funding of facilities and programs, but funding for student scholarships remains a growing need in our area. We are most grateful for the support of the Summers Family and others who are interested in helping us to provide for the needs of TAMIU students now and in the future. We would encourage others to follow the Summers Family's fine example," he said.
