TAMIU Celebrates Women's History Month March 29

A new minor in Women's Studies at Texas A&M International University will be launched in ceremonies observing Womens' History Month on Friday, March 29 at TAMIU's Great Room in the Sue and Radcliffe Killam Library from 5:00 -7:00 p.m.

The event is sponsored by the College of Arts and Humanities and Las Mujeres. It is free of charge and open to the public.

Dr. Norma Cantu, Professor of English at TAMIU, said the new minor in Women's Studies is in keeping with national trends in higher education.

"This is an important new addition to our academic program at TAMIU. Nationwide, Women's Studies are an important new avenue of study that address the significant contribution of women to our history and our world. The tradition of women and the common and uncommon threads they weave throughout the tapestry of our lives is indeed worthy of academic study," Cantu explained.

Event organizer Dr. Kati Pletsch de Garcia, Assistant Professor of English and Spanish at TAMIU, said the event serves to focus local attention on Women's History Month.

"We are happy to be able to offer the community an opportunity to pause and reflect on the accomplishments of women during this month-long observation. In conjunction with Las Mujeres, we encourage the community at large to join us at TAMIU as we note the accomplishments of women," Dr. Garcia said.

A highlight of the celebration will be the traditional "brindis a la mujer," ("Toast to Women").
