Texas A&M International University will add a new office at its downtown facilities with the inauguration Tuesday, April 9 of its Downtown Student Information Office in University Hall at 9 a.m.

Dignitaries from both Texas A&M International University and Laredo Community College will be on hand to usher in the new Office.

Interim President Joe Garcia said the University's Downtown Information Office will be an outreach center providing enrollment information for prospective transfer students.

"As always, Laredo Community College is the source of a considerable portion of our University's transfer students. This Student Information Office provides a valuable presence and continues our educational program at the downtown. We consider it an important element in our student recruitment plan," he explained.

Garcia said that while the majority of University offices are located on the 300-acre northeast campus, the University maintains a research and teaching presence with its Border Trade Institute and Reading Clinic at the downtown campus. In addition, offices of The Texas A&M University System (TAMUS), including the Texas Engineering Extension Service are located in University Hall.

"It is important to provide the community access to the University in two locations. Other educational opportunities at the downtown campus are being reviewed and we look forward to the continued cooperation between the University and Laredo Community College," he said.

Dr. M. Stephen Brown, Dean of Student Affairs at TAMIU, said the new Office will be able to provide a variety of materials to visiting students and members of the community.

"The office will be open Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. and will be able to help students apply for admission, review literature on available programs, collect schedules for upcoming semesters and have questions answered about undergraduate and graduate enrollment at Texas' newest four-year University," he explained.

The Office is located in University Hall Room 133. University Hall is situated to the right of the Harold R. Yeary Library on the LCC campus, West End Washington Street.

The Office phone number is (210) - 791-2185. A 24-hour answering system for voice messages may be accessed by calling 326-2272.
