A paper authored by Texas A&M International University students Marta Rangel and Michael Castillo has been accepted for publication in the Proceedings of the Southwest Regional Decision Sciences Institute's 27th Annual Conference.

The paper, "Using the Internet for MIS Research," details a preliminary study that Rangel and Castillo conducted about how Computer Information Systems (CIS) and Management Information Systems (MIS) faculty use the Internet as a tool to support their research.

Rangel and Castillo, graduate students in TAMIU's Master of Science in Information Systems program, first wrote the paper for their professor, Dr. Stephen Lunce, Assistant Professor of Information Systems.

For the study, Rangel and Castillo asked faculty members to review and comment on a set of questions designed to indicate how the faculty members view the Internet as a research tool. The Internet was then used to contact 250 CIS and MIS faculty throughout the US.

Of the more than 50 professors who responded to the Internet query, 56% rated the Internet and its World Wide Web as a good or excellent source of information. Asked if they saw the use of the Internet as a means of improving the scholarship of their research efforts, 38% said yes.

The paper authored by Rangel and Castillo was one of 125 submitted for the rigorous review. Most of the submitted entries were authored by university professors. Of the 78 papers accepted for publication in the Proceedings, four were written by Doctoral students, and only one, Rangel's and Castillo's paper, was authored by Masters-level students.

The TAMIU students also presented their paper at the Southwest Regional Decision Sciences Institute's 27th Annual Conference held recently in San Antonio.

An edited paper is available for review at the TAMIU Office of Public Affairs, located in the Sue and Radcliffe Killam Library-Administration Building Room 268 West.

The complete paper is available from Dr. Stephen Lunce, Assistant Professor of Information Systems, 326-2502, via e-mail, slunce@tamiu.edu.
