The Texas A&M International University Office of Student Development will host a Student Organization Awards Reception in the Great Room of the Sue and Radcliffe Killam Library-Administration Building (Room 319) on Thursday, April 18 from 6:00 - 7:30 p.m.

The TAMIU Student Organization Awards will honor University student organizations, and organization members and sponsors who have excelled during the 1995-1996 academic year.

Awards will be presented in five categories: Outstanding Community Service, Most Outstanding Sponsor, Leader of the Year, Freshman Excellence, and Most Active Student Organization.

The Outstanding Community Service Award recognizes the TAMIU chartered student organization that has greatly contributed to the TAMIU community and the community of Laredo.

The Outstanding Sponsor Award recognizes the sponsors of chartered student organizations for their energy, enthusiasm, and outstanding abilities.

The Leader of the Year Award gives special recognition to the TAMIU undergraduate or graduate student who possesses outstanding leadership qualities.

The Freshman Excellence Award honors a TAMIU freshman who has been involved in student organizations and who possesses outstanding leadership qualities.

The Most Active Student Organization of the Year recognizes the TAMIU chartered student organization that has demonstrated considerable involvement in on-campus events, community service projects, fundraising endeavors, student activities, and conference participation.

Organizer Gabriela Mendoza, Associate Director of the University's Office of Student Development, said the Student Organization Awards are the first in the University's history.

"Now that TAMIU is a four-year University, we have more student organizations than ever before. The Student Organization Awards will recognize the hard work and dedication that the most active organizations have achieved this year," said Mendoza.

TAMIU currently has 23 chartered student organizations with interests ranging from accounting to astronomy, biology to barbell weight training.

"Involvement in one or more of the University's organizations can add an important dimension to a student's University experience. We hope the Awards will heighten the organizations' visibility and encourage more University students to become involved," added Mendoza.

For more information on the nominations for the University's Student Organization Awards, call the TAMIU Office of Student Development at 326-2280, or visit offices in Killam Library-Administration Building Room 159 West.

TAMIU office hours are 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Monday - Friday.
