Students who have earned an Associate of Applied Arts degree at a junior or community college can parlay their 2-year degree into a 4-year Bachelor of Applied Arts and Science (BAAS) degree at Texas A&M International University.

Maria R. Rosillo, Director of the University's Office of Admissions and Advisement, said TAMIU's BAAS degree is designed for students who have already earned credit in a vocational-technical area or any area not offered at TAMIU, such as physical education, art, journalism, or agriculture.

Students who pursue a Bachelor of Applied Arts and Science degree follow a different basic academic curriculum than the Bachelor of Arts degree.

In addition to 58 hours of core curriculum, the BAAS degree requires 24 hours in a Specialization Curriculum, 21 hours of Non-Specialized Curriculum, 24 hours in Vocational/Technical Field, and 6 hours of Electives.

In some instances, students may be granted vocational-technical field credit for work experience.

Although the integrity of the core curriculum is retained, the BAAS differs from other bachelor's degrees in that 24 credit hours earned in a vocational/technical field may be applied toward the BAAS.

"This means students who pursue a BAAS start their degree program with almost a full semester of course work completed. The considerable savings in tuition, fees, and time makes this degree a great option for anyone who has an Associates," explained Rosillo.

The BAAS degree is also an ideal option for those who hold an Associates degree and would like to increase their marketability in today's competitive job field.

"Often students who hold a vocational/technical certificate or Associates degree find that their certificates or 2-year degrees are not enough. A BAAS degree can be the answer," she added.

Persons who need more information on TAMIU's BAAS degree should schedule an appointment with an advisor by calling the University's Office of Advisement at 326-2200 or 326-2218, or visit offices in Killam Library-Administration Building Room 168 West.

Advisement Office hours are 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, and Friday, and 8:00 a.m. - 7:00 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday.
