Texas A&M; International University's first Endowed Chair, the College of Business Administration's Distinguished Professor of International Trade Studies in the Western Hemisphere, will be funded by a $1.5 million grant.

The historic announcement was made by Jose Garcia, Interim President and Dr. Khosrow Fatemi, Dean of the College of Business Administration at a Friday press conference in the UniversityØs Great Room in the Sue and Radcliffe Killam Library.

Funding for the Chair is being provided by the Center for the Study of Western Hemispheric Trade, a federally funded initiative.

Interim President Jose Garcia said announcement of the University's first Endowed Chair signals another chapter in the University's ongoing growth and development.

“We have just completed out first academic year at Texas’ newest four-year university. This announcement sees us enter yet another phase in growth, that of joining a select group of universities across the nation who offer their students such study and research opportunities,” he said.

Dr. Fatemi said that in addition to providing compensation for a highly qualified scholar who will administer a variety of programs and activities, the grant provides for additional items of interest.

"This grant also provides for forums for international discussion and debate for representatives from countries in the Western Hemisphere, studies and research projects on subjects which affect Western Hemispheric trade, and additional activities relevant to the Center for the Study of Western Hemispheric Trade's mission to conduct significant research, policy analysis and educational activities related to trade and investment in the Americas," Fatemi explained.
