TAMIU Faculty, Sociology Students Attend Conference

Three Texas A&M International University faculty and four TAMIU students and graduates participated in the Meetings of the Southwestern Social Science Association/Southwestern Sociological Association in Houston recently.

Dr. Marjorie Coppock, TAMIU Assistant Professor of Sociology and Sociology/Psychology Club Sponsor, chaired a session on Comparative Research in International Areas. Discussant for the session was Patricia Manning, TAMIU Visiting Assistant Professor of Political Science.

Dr. Coppock also organized and chaired a second session on Comparative Research in International Areas. Presenters included Dr. Cecilia Garza, TAMIU Assistant Professor of Sociology; Sandra Thompson, who graduated from TAMIU with a Master of Arts in Counseling Psychology; and Coppock.

Dr. Garza presented "Perceptions of Household Workers From Both Sides of the Border".

Thompson presented "Hispanics and Alzheimer's Disease: Stressors and Coping Strategies", a paper based on her thesis.

Coppock presented "Assessing Social Impacts in an Educational Boomtown on the Border". She was assisted in her presentation by Jane Porter, who graduated from TAMIU in 1995 with a Bachelor of Arts degree.

TAMIU students Erica Brewer and Victoria Woods, both officers in the University's Sociology/Psychology Club, also attended the Meetings and participated in several sessions.
