Texas A&M International University graduate students and TAMIU Associate Professor of Special Education Dr. Ralph Hausman presented a session at the Annual Conference of the Texas Council for Exceptional Children held in San Antonio recently.

The students, Claudia Dovalina-Romero, Antonieta Ruiz, and Christina Santos, are graduate students in TAMIU's Educational Diagnostician Program.

The presentation by Dr. Hausman and the TAMIU students was entitled "Using the Denver 2 (DDST) to Assess Bilingual Preschool-age Children: Development and Standardization on New Scoring Procedures."

It focused on the standardization of a new method of scoring the Denver 2, a developmental screening device designed for use with children from birth to 6 years of age. It measures development in four areas--Fine-Motor, Gross Motor, Language, and Social-Adaptive Skills. Traditionally, a child's performance results in designations of "normal," "suspect," and "delayed" classifications.

The new scoring method presented in the TAMIU session results in age equivalent scores for each of the four test areas. The age equivalents are of more use to educational diagnosticians since they can be compared to results from other tests.

The new method was designed by Hausman and is being tested by graduate students in the Educational Diagnostician Program.

Hausman also presented a second session at the conference. It focused on the use of assistive technology in the form of a switch-operated "Cooper Car" that promotes empowered mobility in severely impaired children with multiple handicaps.
