TAMIU Hosts Reception For Top Student Organizations

Top Texas A&M International University student clubs were honored during TAMIU's First Annual Student Organizational Awards Reception held in the University's Great Room recently.

Awards for Outstanding Community Service, Most Outstanding Sponsor, Leader of the Year, Freshman Excellence, and Most Active Student Organization were presented during the reception. The event was hosted by the University's Office of Student Development.

Co-recipients of the Outstanding Community Service Award were the Political Science Association and the Sociology/Psychology Club. The clubs were sited for their service both within the University and throughout the community at large. Other nominees included the Criminal Justice Scholars' Organization, Rainbow Education Association of Laredo, and Student Ambassadors.

Dr. Randel Brown, sponsor of the Rainbow Education Association of Laredo, received the Outstanding Sponsor Award. He is an Assistant Professor of Education with the College of Education's Department of Special Populations. Other nominees included Dr. Stephen Brown, sponsor of the Student Government Association, Dr. Aaron Knight, Political Science Association sponsor, Ricardo Ortegon, Student Ambassador Sponsor, and Dr. Kamal Parhizgar, International Business Association Sponsor.

Recipient of the Leader of the Year Award was Gilberto Sanchez, President of the Student Ambassadors. Other nominees included Judy Escamilla, of the Dusty Spikers Volleyball Club, Ries Landrum, Rainbow Education Association of Laredo, Kriztella Lopez, International Business Association, and Lori Trusky, Student Government Association.

Gabriel Guzman, Student Ambassador Parliamentarian, received the Freshman Excellence Award. Also nominated for the award was Nadia Plascencia of the International Business Association.

The Most Active Student Organization of the Year Award was presented to the Sociology/Psychology Club. Among the club's activities this year were a food drive to benefit a local food bank and participation in the Southwestern Social Science Association/Southwestern Sociological Association Meetings in Houston. Other nominees include the Criminal Justice ScholarsŲ Organization, International Business Association, Rainbow Education Association of Laredo, and Student Ambassadors.

Nominations for each category were submitted to the Office of Student Development and a Selection Committee comprised of TAMIU faculty and an administrative staff member evaluated the nominees and selected the recipient for each award.

Selection Committee members were Dr. Firooz Khosraviyani, Assistant Professor of Mathematics and Computing; Dr. Peggy Hardman, Visiting Assistant Professor of History; Dr. Patricia Lozano, Assistant Professor of Bilingual Education; and Debra Russell, Coordinator of Services for Special Populations.

Gabriela Mendoza, Associate Director of the University's Office of Student Development, said the Student Organization Awards recognize the hard work and dedication that the most active student organizations have achieved this year.

"Involvement in one or more of TAMIU's student organizations can add an important dimension to a student's University experience. We hope the Awards will heighten the organizations' visibility and encourage more University students to become involved," she said.

TAMIU currently has 25 chartered student organizations with interested ranging from accounting to astronomy, biology to barbell weight training.
