The Texas Board of Nurse Examiners has awarded full accreditation status to Texas A&M International University's School of Nursing.

Interim President Jose Garcia said the Full Accreditation signals yet another step forward in the University's continued growth and development.

This accreditation affirms the quality of the program. Our School of Nursing graduates will help address our area's overwhelming need for qualified BSN graduates. I salute the efforts of the faculty and staff of the School of Nursing for having achieved this milestone, he said.

The examiners for the full accreditation commended the School of Nursing for having met the criteria for accreditation in an especially short time, said Director of the TAMIU School of Nursing, Dr. Charlotte Torres.

The Texas Board of Nurse Examiners traditionally returns for a site visit the first semester after the first student has graduated to determine whether a program is prepared to receive Full Accreditation. Our initial accreditation was awarded in September of 1994.

The progress since then has been phenomenal. The Board was impressed with our growth and development and awarded the Full Accreditation status at its May meeting, Dr. Torres explained.

She noted that she too was proud of the efforts of the School of Nursing faculty and staff in working to secure the Full Accreditation. The School of Nursing welcomed its first students in January of 1995 in facilities provided by Mercy Regional Medical Center.

The first student graduate was Graciela Gonzalez, who received her BSN in the May Spring commencement exercises.

Torres noted that to date, over $34,000 in tuition and fees assistance has been provided to 33 students through the generosity of the Lamar Bruni Vergara Trust. The Trust has provided over $650,000 in program development funds for the nursing program.
