TAMIU Sets Orientation Dates For New Students

The Texas A&M International University Office of Student Development will offer five Orientation sessions this summer for new freshmen students, new transfer and graduate students, and parents and guests of new students.

Three Freshman Orientation sessions will be offered in July and August. Freshmen Orientation dates are: Thursday, July 18, from 8:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.; Saturday, July 27, 10:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.; and Monday, August 5, 8:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.

A Parent/Guest Orientation session for parents and guests of new students will be offered Thursday, August 1, from 6:00 - 9:00 p.m. in the Great Room of the Sue and Radcliffe Killam Library-Administration Building (Room 319).

New Transfer and New Graduate Student Orientation will be offered Thursday, August 15 from 6:00 - 9:00 p.m.

The Freshmen Orientation sessions will include: "The New Tradition," a presentation on campus activities and student organizations; "The Half Hour Social," where participants can meet fellow freshmen; "Orientation Leader Tips For College Success," featuring advice on coping during the first year at a university; "Dusty's Campus Life Skit," an entertaining take on student life featuring the TAMIU Drama Club; "Shortcuts To Success," a presentation on time management, note taking, and test taking; "The Answer Is Right Game," a fun game designed to answer participants' questions; and "Information Fair," during which representatives from the University's Division of Student Affairs and other TAMIU offices will answer participants' questions.

Freshmen Orientation participants who have not registered for Fall classes may also attend "The Advising Session" to learn more about the University's academic areas. TAMIU faculty will be available during this presentation to help participants register for Fall classes a choose a class schedule suited to their individual needs and interests.

Orientation participants who are already registered for Fall courses may attend "Do What You Gotta Do," for a tour of the TAMIU campus, the Killam Library and the University's bookstore.

"FAFSA Express," a free service for electronically processing and transmitting the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), will be offered on July 18 for Orientation participants and college students who have not submitted their FAFSA. Students who wish to use this service may call the TAMIU Office of Financial Aid at 326-2225 to schedule an appointment. Students who participate in the July 18 Orientation should schedule their appointment after 3:30 p.m.

New freshmen may register for any one of the three Freshmen Orientation sessions by calling the TAMIU Office of Student Development at 326-2280 or visiting offices in Killam Library-Administration Building Room 159 West.

All new freshmen are required to attend one of the Freshmen Orientation sessions. New freshmen must attend an Orientation session in order to have their Fall `96 Registration considered complete.

The Parent/Guest Orientation session for parents and guests of new students is scheduled for Thursday, August 1 from 6:00 - 9:00 p.m. in the Great Room of the Sue and Radcliffe Killam Library-Administration Building (Room 319).

Portions of the session will be offered both in English and in Spanish. The session will include informative presentations on the University and University life, a skit on campus life featuring members of the TAMIU Drama Club, a tour of the campus, and an opportunity to meet with representatives from offices in the Division of Student Affairs, including the Financial Aid, Student Development, Career Planning, and Student Health Services office.

The University's Business Office will also remain open through 7:00 p.m. for the convenience of parents who wish to pay their son's or daughter's registration fees.

The number of participants for the Parent/Guest Orientation is limited. Interested persons are urged to register for the session with the TAMIU Office of Student Development as soon as possible.

New Transfer and New Graduate Student Orientation will be offered Thursday, August 15 from 6:00 - 9:00 p.m. The session will feature a presentation on campus activities and student organizations, information on the University, a tour of the campus, and an opportunity to meet with representatives from offices in the Division of Student Affairs. Participants will also have the opportunity to register for Fall semester courses.
