Two Texas A&M International University Police Officers were presented with a Sponsorship Appreciation Plaque for their participation in the recently held Texas Special Olympics Torch Run.

TAMIU Police Officers Peter Bak and Jaime Rios represented the TAMIU Police Department in the event, which was a fund and awareness raiser for the Texas Special Olympics.

Because the TAMIU Police Department was only formed last year when the University moved to its new north Laredo campus, this was the first time the TAMIU Police Department participated in the Special Olympics Torch Run.

Also participating in the Torch Run were representatives from the Laredo Police Department, Webb County Sheriff's Office, District Attorney's Investigators, Laredo Community College Police Department, as well as representatives from police departments throughout Texas.

Bak, Rios and the Laredo contingent ran and rode bikes from Laredo to Corpus Christi. The TAMIU officers then joined members of the Corpus Christi Police Department for the relay from Corpus Christi to San Antonio. Members of the Bexar County Sheriff's Office and the San Antonio Police Department continued the relay to Austin.

Torch Run participants alternately ran for 2 miles and rode bikes for 5 miles. Rios, an experienced marathon runner, also ran city limits to city limits in San Diego, Freer, and Alice.

At the conclusion of the Torch Run, the Texas Special Olympics Flame was lit and the games declared open.

TAMIU office hours are 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Monday - Friday.
