Students interested in applying for scholarships for Texas A&M International University's Honors Initiative Plan, The Vanguard, should do so by Aug. 16, said Program Coordinator Dr. Faridoun Farrokh.

"We are delighted to make available a limited number of scholarships to deserving students who qualify for entry into our program," he said.

The scholarship monies will cover tuition and fees for honors courses the Vanguard student enrolls in, he said.

Dr. Farrokh explained that criteria for consideration of the scholarships will follow that of admission into The Vanguard.

"In addition to completing a scholarship application, students must meet all requirements for admission to the University, rank in the upper 25% of their high school graduating class, present a SAT score of 900 or more or an ACT score of 21 or higher, have a strong science mathematics and English background, recommendations of two high school teachers or counselors and approval by the Honors Plan committee that includes the University's Dean of the College of Arts and Humanities, Dr. Jerry Thompson, The Vanguard program coordinator, and members of The Vanguard faculty," he said.

Application forms can be retrieved from the Office of Financial Aid, located in Killam Library 155. Office hours are Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays from 8 a.m.-5 p.m.; Wednesdays and Thursdays from 8 a.m.- 7 p.m.

The Vanguard is an Honors Initiative Plan that signals the University's entry into the development of a comprehensive Honors Program. Initial course offerings will be limited to core disciplines of English and History at Freshman and Sophomore levels. The University will continue to develop additional core disciplines in other Colleges across the University until an entire cycle of the core disciplines with honors sections are offered," he explained.
