Former students and graduates of Texas A&I University at Laredo, Laredo State University and Texas A&M International University are the honored guests for a social meeting of the Texas A&M International University Alumni Association scheduled Friday, Aug. 16 at the Holiday Inn Civic Center Patio from 5:30-8:30 p.m.

Dubbed "A Gathering by the Pool," the meeting will provide an opportunity for former students and graduates of TAMIU and its predecessors, Texas A&I University at Laredo and Laredo State University, to meet and renew ties, said incoming president Lulu Sanchez.

"The University has been part of all of our lives for over 25 years. Some of us may have attended it when it was Texas A&I University at Laredo, Laredo State University or now as Texas A&M International University. We want all of our former students and graduates to join us as we get acquainted, informed and, of course, socialize," she said.

The evening's schedule includes a get acquainted period from 5:30-6:30 p.m. and a meal of fajitas, rice and beans and soft drinks from 6:30-7:30 p.m. At 7:30, a brief meeting will be held with additional socializing thereafter.

Sanchez said the TAMIU Alumni Association has long assisted incoming undergraduate and graduate students through its scholarship and loan programs, and seeks to expand its involvement.

"We've been able to help many students realize their dreams of a higher education at our University. We want to continue to make those dreams possible and continue to assist our University to become the best that it can be. The Association meets regularly and maintains close contact with our University through involvement in special committees and focus groups. We are growing with our new four-year University and we look forward to helping it to continue to grow," she explained.

Sanchez urged all former students and graduates to attend the Aug. 16 function and re-establish their link to their alma mater. She said the group will soon announce plans for a Homecoming Celebration.

"We'd love to see some familiar faces and some new faces and we hope that former students and graduates will be excited by this opportunity," she said.

Former students and graduates are urged to RSVP by Aug. 11 to Grace Lopez at 723-9080. For additional information, contact the Office for Advancement and External Affairs at Texas A&M International University, 5201 University Boulevard, 326-2175.

TAMIU office hours are from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Friday.
