Seven Texas A&M International University students spent part of their summer participating in the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities' 1996 National Internship Program (HNIP).

The HNIP is a paid 10-week internship program which focuses on exposing minority students, particularly Hispanics, to career opportunities in the federal government.

The A&M International students interned at government agencies in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area and in field sites throughout the country.

A&M International students interning in Washington, D.C. include Javier Barrientos and Keith Pearson, interning with the International Trade Administration; Gary Bloomberg, interning with Capital Markets; and Landon Romano, interning with the Forest Service.

Interning in field sites in other areas of the country were Mary Blackhurst, with the Health Resources and Services Administration in Rockville, Maryland; Richard Rendon, with the Computer and Information Sciences and Engineering in Arlington, Virginia; and Juan Velasquez, Bureau of Export Administration in Des Plaines, Illinois.

Each A&M International student received round-trip transportation to their job site plus a stipend of $370 per week for sophomores and juniors, $410 per week for seniors, and $490 per week for graduate and law students.

The students applied for the internship program through the University's Office of Career Planning and Placement.

Sujatha Clemons, Director of Career Planning and Placement at A&M International, said the National Internship Program is a wonderful opportunity for students to gain valuable work experience in their chosen career fields.

"The HNIP affords students an opportunity to expand their knowledge and travel to another part of the country," she said.

Each year, the University's Office of Career Planning and Placement accepts applications for the HNIP internship. Deadline for next summer's HNIP internship is March 1.

For more information on the HNIP and other internships available for A&M International students, call the Office of Career Planning and Placement at 326-2260 or visit offices in the Sue and Radcliffe Killam Library-Administration Building Room 157 West.
