Eight Texas A&M International University students who worked as Orientation Leaders at the University this summer received high praise from A&M International's Office of Student Development.

Gabriela Mendoza, Associate Director of Student Development at A&M International, said the Orientation Leaders excelled at representing the University to new students and their parents during recently held freshmen orientation sessions.

"The Orientation Leaders served as a vital connective link for entering students. They provided new students with all the academic know-how freshmen need to survive their first year at a University," she said.

Orientation Leaders were Gabriel Cisneros, Margie Colon, Jean Louis Egremy, Emerson Meguro, Tom Moore, Irma Ramirez, Ricardo Romano, and Laura Soto.

They reflect a diverse student population, with local students from both sides of the border and Mexican and Brazilian nationals represented.

The eight Orientation Leaders were chosen after a rigorous selection process. They underwent over 40 hours of training in areas including team building, group dynamics, time management skills, academic advising, communication skills, new student dynamics, college transition, communications with students with disabilities, and conducting campus tours.

Mendoza urges students who are enthusiastic, good communicators, academically motivated, and actively involved in student organizations or University activities to apply for next summer's Orientation Leader Program.

"The Orientation Leaders Program is an wonderful opportunity for our students to enhance their interpersonal, public speaking, and project management skills," she said.

A&M Intranational University students who are interested in becoming Orientation Leaders or who would like more information on the program should call Mendoza at the University's Office of Student Development, 326-2280, or visit offices in Killam Library-Administration Building Room 159 West.
