Texas A&M International University freshman Sandra Hernandez has been selected as the first recipient of the Ricardo Ray Ortegon Student Ambassador Scholarship.

Hernandez, a Biology major, will receive $800, with $400 awarded for the Fall semester and $400 to be awarded in the Spring semester.

She graduated in the top 20% of her class at United High School and was a founding member of the A&M International Honorary High School Ambassadors.

Honorary High School Ambassadors link high school students, the University, and the Texas A&M International Student Ambassadors, a student service organization which assists students in preparing for and adjusting to the rigors of University life, and participates in campus and community events.

The Ricardo Ray Ortegon Student Ambassador Scholarship was established by the Student Ambassadors this year in honor of Ortegon, the organization's founder.

Ortegon, Associate Director of the University's Office of Enrollment Management and School Relations, founded the A&M International Student Ambassadors in 1995.
