Texas A&M International Offers Free Talk On AIDS Tues., Oct. 8

Texas A&M International University will host a free talk on "AIDS And Its Impact On You" on Tuesday, October 8 at 2:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. in Bullock Hall room 101 on the University's main campus, 5201 University Boulevard.

Featured guest speaker will be Dr. Maurice Click, Gateway Community Health Center Clinical Director/Physician.

University students and members of the community are invited to attend the free talk.

Dr. Click, a leading expert on AIDS treatment in Laredo, will present information on the history of AIDS, its symptoms, treatments, and ways to reduce the risk of infection. His lecture will include an informative slide presentation and a question and answer period.

AIDS, Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome, is a disease in which the body's immune system breaks down, leaving the body defenseless against life-threatening illnesses. The deadly disease is caused by a virus called the Human Immunodeficiency Virus, or HIV.

A person can become infected with HIV by having unprotected anal, vaginal, or oral sex with an infected person or by sharing drug needles or syringes with an infected person.

About half of HIV-infected persons develop AIDS within 10 years. HIV can live in the human body for many years before symptoms appear. An HIV-antibody test can determine if someone has been infected with the virus.

A&M International's Office of Student Health Services will offer free Confidential HIV Testing and Counseling at the University on Wednesday, October 9 from 2:00 - 5:00 p.m. and 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. Students may register for HIV Testing or obtain more information by contacting the Office of Student Health Services at 326-2235.

Anyone who may have been exposed to HIV is encouraged to take advantage of the free HIV Testing.

The testing and the AIDS presentation are being sponsored by the Office of Student Health Services and are part of the University's Fall 1996 Health and Wellness Initiative.
