This Fall at Texas A&M International University, undergraduate and graduate business majors have an opportunity to participate in a new internship course that affords students a valuable career experience.

Dr. Cheryl Dyer Vargas, Assistant Professor of Business Communication, said the College of Business Administration has developed the new course to allow students an opportunity to augment their classroom learning with practical field experience.

"We have identified a number of local businesses and organizations that will provide interns with 15-19 hours of work per week. Students will be supervised by professionals in an organizational setting that is appropriate to the student's career objectives. Students will receive a stipend for their participation," she said.

Dr. Dyer Vargas said entry into the College of Business Administration Internship Program will be competitive and, in its initial offering, limited to ten students.

"Undergraduate business students must have completed 90 semester credit hours (SCH) with an overall 2.50 GPA with more than a 3.0 GPA in the student's major business courses. Graduate business students must have completed at least 18 SCH with at least a 3.5 GPA for all attempted course work toward the degree. The internship course can be taken more than once, but only three hours will count toward a degree program," she explained.

Among local businesses and organizations participating in the internship program are Columbia Doctors Hospital of Laredo; Fritz Companies; Grainger; Daniel B. Hastings, Inc. and Pacific Southwest Bank.

Interested undergraduate and graduate students must complete a resume form available at the Office of Career Planning and Placement. Application deadline for the Spring semester program is November 1, 1996.

Students who meet all criteria will be matched to an appropriate internship experience.

Coordination of the Internship Program will be handled by Dr. Dyer Vargas and Dr. Stephanie Smith, Assistant Professor of Finance.
