Texas A&M International University in cooperation with the South Texas Blood and Tissue Center will hold a Blood Drive and Marrow Registry in the West Parking Lot of the University's main campus, 5201 University Boulevard, on Tuesday, November 12 from 10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.

Donors will receive free blood typing, cholesterol level, hemoglobin and hematocrit level, HIV and syphilis testing, and membership in a Blood Benefit Plan which entitles donors and their immediate family to financial coverage of uninsured blood costs of up to $1,000 for a period of one year after donation.

Interested persons may register to donate blood by calling A&M International's Office of Student Health Services at 326-2235 or by visiting the office in the Sue and Radcliffe Killam Library-Administration Building room 156 West.

Anyone between the ages of 17 and 72 who weighs at least 110 pounds, has not had hepatitis, and is in good general health may donate blood.

Donors must show proper photo identification such as a student ID or a driver's license before beginning the donation process.

The South Texas Blood and Tissue Center suggests that donors eat a nutritious breakfast or lunch before donating blood. Donors are also advised to wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothes when giving blood.

Aspirin and aspirin-like products should be avoided for three days prior to donating, if possible.

Blood donors who are between the ages of 18 and 55 and who are at least 25% Hispanic, African-American, Asian, or Native American/Alaskan Native may also register with the Minority Marrow Donor Program by signing a consent form authorizing that a small portion of their donated blood be used for tissue-typing.

Persons who register with the Marrow Donor Program will only be contacted if a preliminary match for a person in need is found.

More information on the National Marrow Donor Program may be obtained from the South Texas Blood and Tissue Center at 1-800-292-5534.
