Six Computer Information System students from Texas A&M International University competed against students from top Texas universities at the Data Processing Management Association (DPMA) Regional 3 Student Conference and Programming Competition held in San Antonio recently.

The A&M International students, all members of the University's Student Systems Group (SSG), competed in two programming events, VisualBASIC and C++.

For the competition, teams were given a problem statement and four hours in which to program a solution.

Members of the VisualBASIC team include Kerry Bonugli, Belinda Lozano, and Jesus Carmona. C++ team members include Carlos Gil, Tyfanny D. Silva, and Carlos Gomez.

Both teams were coached by Dr. Jim Chen, Assistant Professor of Computer Information Systems at the University and faculty advisor-elect of the SSG.

The SSG links the academic and business world through affiliations with professional information resource management associations. SSG provides speakers, tours, and projects to better inform members of the systems' function as a component of effective management. The organization is open to A&M International students and community members interested in information systems and computer-based systems.

Last year, SSG members competed in the DPMA Regional Competition for the first time in the University's history. The A&M International team was pitted against top teams from Tarleton State University, the University of Texas at Arlington, the University of Houston, Texas A&M University--Corpus Christi, the University of Texas at San Antonio, and Baylor University.
