A&M International Students Offered Paid HACU Summer Internships

Texas A&M International University students who wish to participate in a paid internship program this summer may apply for the 1997 National Internship Program (HNIP) offered to TAMIU students through the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU).

The HNIP is a paid 10-week internship program that focuses on exposing minority students, particularly Hispanics, to career opportunities in the federal government.

Paid internships are available in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area and in field sites throughout the country.

Participating federal departments include Agriculture, Commerce, Energy, Interior, Labor, Transportation and the Federal Aviation Administration, the Public Health Service, and the Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation.

Positions are available in accounting, biological science, business administration, communications, computer science, English, health services, history, human resources, intergovernmental affairs, languages, math, science, management, physical science and many other fields.

Interns receive round-trip transportation to the job site plus stipends of $370 per week for sophomores and juniors, $410 per week for seniors, and $490 per week for graduate and law students.

A&M International students who are interested in applying for the HACU National Internship Program must submit an application and additional required documents (essay, resume, letter of recommendation, transcripts) to the University's Office of Career Planning and Placement by February 21.

Applicants must be legally eligible to work in the US, must have completed the freshman year by June 1997, have a minimum grade point average of 3.0, must be a currently enrolled student, and be available to participate in the 10-week internship program, which runs from June 2 - August 8.

Virginia Garcia, Director of Career Planning and Placement at the University, said the HACU National Internship Program affords students an opportunity to gain valuable work experience in their chosen career fields, expand their knowledge and travel to another part of the country.

"The HACU National Internship Program is a wonderful opportunity. In past years, A&M International has been well represented in this great internship program. We hope our students will take advantage of the program this year," Garcia said.
