Dr. Norma Cantu, Professor of English at Texas A&M International University will conduct a public reading from her award-winning book Canicula: Snapshots of a Childhood en la Frontera on Monday, March 3 at 6 p.m. in Bullock Hall 101.

Canicula was the recipient of the 1995 Premio Atzlan National Literary Prize in Fiction.

It is considered a descriptive portrayal of childhood on the border and revolves around the authors use of photographs to evoke the past. The time and people frozen in the snapshots capture rich detail and emotion as the author creates snapshots with words.

Cantu is considered one of a group of distinct and richly informative poetic voices evolving along the frontera.

She recently received an honorarium as a recipient of the Gateways `96 Program Award from the Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center of San Antonio that will see her produce an ethnographic analysis of the custom of la quinceanera.

She holds a Ph.D. In from the University of Nebraska. Her MS and BS were earned at the former Texas A&I University at Laredo, now Texas A&M International University. She was a Fulbright Research Fellow to Spain twice.
