A&M International Nursing Students Receive Tuition Reimbursement

Thirty-six Texas A&M International University Nursing students who successfully completed course work in the Fall semester received over $19,900 in tuition and fee reimbursement thanks to funding support from the Lamar Bruni-Vergara Trust.

Dr. Susan S. Baker, Associate Professor of Nursing and Interim Director of the School of Nursing at A&M International, said any University Nursing student who completes course work with a minimum of a "C" is automatically reimbursed for tuition and fees at the end of each semester as long as funds are available.

"More than 92% of our students work full-time and attend school part-time. The tuition and fee reimbursement enables students to focus their energies on completing their studies so they can quickly return to the community to provide advanced nursing care to Laredo citizens," said Dr. Baker.

Students who received tuition and fee reimbursement for course work completed in the Fall include Antonio Aguilar, Enedina Berrones, Damaris O. Carreon, Esther Charo, Noemi Cain, Monica Cantu, Margarita Casarez, Argelia Casas, Rosalinda Cuellar, Ana Laura Diaz, John A. Fuentes, Norma Garcia, Alfonso Garza, Angela Garza, Celinda Gonzalez, Christine M. Gonzalez, Susana Guevara, Rita Marie Haber, Ma. del Rosario Hernandez, Claudia Hourigan, Jamy Josey, Lorie Killian, Reid B. Lesser Jr., Robert Moran, Renee Moreno, Oralia Munguia, Patricia S. Niles, Carolyn Otero, Ricardo Perez, Antonio Salinas, Martha Salinas, Jose Luis Santos, Alicia Salazar, Alfredo Vela, Lynda Villarreal, and Minerva Villarreal.

A&M International's School of Nursing also awarded $6,500 in Nursing Student Scholarships.

Four $1,000 scholarships based on financial need were awarded to Margarita Casarez, Norma Garcia, John A. Fuentes, and Patricia S. Niles.

Three $500 Academic Achievement Scholarship were awarded to John A. Fuentes, Rita Marie Haber, and Renee Moreno. The three recipients have a perfect 4.0 Grade Point Average in all completed Nursing courses.

A $1,000 scholarship for best submitted Essay was awarded to John A. Fuentes. The essay was one of five submitted and judged through a blind review by School of Nursing faculty.

Funding for the scholarships was provided by the Lamar Bruni Vergara Trust.

"We owe much gratitude and appreciation to Judge Solomon Caseb and Mr. J.C. Martin. Without their faith in this University and this community, we could not have developed this nursing program," said Baker.

A&M International's State-accredited program offers a Baccalaureate degree for Registered Nurses. The program features a transcultural and human caring curriculum designed to address the special needs of culturally diverse populations while emphasizing the right of individuals to make their own health care decisions in keeping with their own values.

Formerly housed in facilities provided by Mercy Regional Medical Center, the A&M International School of Nursing recently moved to the University's main campus.

The School of Nursing is housed in Canseco Hall, a building named in honor of the late Dr. F. M. Canseco.
