Central Power and Light Co. provided Texas A&M International University officials with a $42,000 incentive in ceremonies held Friday morning in the Great Room of the Sue and Radcliffe Killam Library.

The incentive recognizes the University's participation in a high- efficiency energy program that is projected to result in substantial energy savings for the University.

University president Dr. J. Charles Jennett said the University is happy to embrace new technology that maximizes its resources.

"This campus was constructed using the latest technology to help assure that the investment made by the State of Texas and private and corporate donors maximizes available resources. Our participation in this energy savings program is consistent with our internal mandate to make the most of our resources," Dr. Jennett said.

John Hickle, commercial sales consultant for CPL, worked with A&M International's project engineers to coordinate the project and said it is part of CPL's overall demand-side management program.

"It's a good program for A&M International because they are able to save money on energy costs and it's good for CPL because we are better able to guide the growth of our electric demand. This type of program can help or even postpone the need to build new generating plants, substations and distribution feeders," Hickle explained.

The University qualified for the incentive program through the installation of high efficiency chillers which were recommended under CPL's High Efficiency Chiller Incentive Program.

The Incentive Program is coordinated through CPL's marketing department.

Other demand-side management programs the marketing department coordinates include the Good Cents and Good Cents Improved programs, thermal energy storage, high-efficiency air conditioning and outdoor lighting.

Additional University support from CPL has been provided through a corporate gift of $100,00 to be presented over a five-year period that helped fund construction of Phase II of the campus.

Phase II, which adds four new buildings to the University campus, was dedicated in ceremonies held last month.
