Texas A&M International University has been granted charter membership in Alpha Kappa Delta, an International Sociology Honor Society.

The new A&M International charter is officially named Alpha Zeta of Texas. Chapters in each state are named according to the Greek alphabet in the order of their founding.

Alpha Kappa Delta, which was founded in 1920, derives its name from the first letters of three Greek words: anthropon (mankind), katamanthaneion (to investigate thoroughly or to conduct research), and diakonesein (for the purpose of service). When translated freely, the three-word phrase expresses both the goal and the method of the organization--to study humankind for the purpose of service.

To be eligible for a chapter, an institution's sociology department must have at least two full-time sociology professors and it must offer 30 semester hours of standard sociology courses.

Membership in the charter is limited to students with superior scholarship and serious interest in sociology.

A&M International students who have been accepted for membership in the University's Alpha Kappa Delta chapter include: Tamara Davis Casso, Estella Yvette Coronado, Jaime Gabriel Garza, Karen Louise Hale, Veronica G. Martinez, Edward P. Matos, and Melinda Vidaurri.

The A&M International students will be inducted into the Alpha Kappa Delta chapter during a brief initiation ceremony on Friday, May 2 at 4 pm in the Sue and Radcliffe Killam Library-Administration Building room 430.

Inductees will each receive a Certificate of Membership during the ceremony. A reception will follow. Light refreshments will be served.
