Texas A&M International University's Director of Public Affairs and Information Services, Steve K. Harmon, has earned accreditation from the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA) following successful completion of a comprehensive written and oral examination administered by the Society.

Harmon, a member of the University staff since 1987, is an award winning writer and publications designer.

Accreditation by the PRSA is offered only to professionals with several years of experience in the field who have successfully completed an examination which measures the candidate's knowledge of public relations practice, communications theory, management science, ethics and general understanding of the profession.

"We are proud and honored to have an accredited member of PRSA directing our University's news and information services," said J. Charles Jennett, President of Texas A&M International University. "Steve is a respected former journalist whose work and talent are valued throughout the community and The Texas A&M University System."

In honor of Harmon's achievement, a special reception will be hosted by the University April 28 at 4 p.m. in the Great Room of Killam Library, KL 319.

Harmon, a J.W. Nixon High School graduate, holds graduate and undergraduate degrees from Texas A&M International University and the former Laredo State University. He has held various media and public information positions, including mass media specialist for the Laredo-Webb County Health Department and news editor, features editor and special publications editor for The Laredo Morning Times. He has additional experience in radio/TV and his freelance work has appeared in Texas Monthly and Domain Magazine. He has worked as a communications consultant to The Meadows Foundation.

PRSA has recognized only two Laredoans with professional accreditation. Harmon is the second. The first was Henry Garcia, Director of Communications for Laredo Independent School District. A local chapter of PRSA is now being organized.
