A&M International Names Dr. Baker Director of Canseco School of Nursing

Texas A&M International University has named Dr. Susan Scoville Baker Director of the Dr. F. M. Canseco School of Nursing.

In making the announcement, Dr. J. Charles Jennett, University president, said the University is looking forward to Dr. Baker's leadership for the growing program.

"Dr. Baker's appointment comes at a critical time in the growth of this dynamic program. We anticipate adding a Masters of Science in Nursing and expand our international focus with program development in Mexico and beyond. Dr. Baker will help lead these important new initiatives," Dr. Jennett said.

Baker said she looks forward to the challenge and is impressed with the community support the program has received.

"We have been most fortunate to have earned the support of the Canseco family, who provided the generous gift of Canseco Hall, our new home, and the recently renewed support of the Lamar Bruni Vergara Trust, that continues to provide critical program development funding," Baker said.

Baker holds a Ph.D. in Preventive Medicine and Community Health from the University of Texas Medical Branch-Galveston. She also holds an M.S. in community Psych-Mental Health Nursing (Children) from Boston University and a B.S. in Nursing, also from BU. She also holds a B.A. in English/Music from Carleton College of Minnesota.

Licensed as a Registered Nurse in Texas and Massachusetts, she holds certification from the American Nurses1 Association and the State of Texas as a Child and Adolescent Psychiatric Mental Health Clinical Nurse Specialist. In addition, she is certified as a National Coalition Building Institute Trainer and is completing clinical training as a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner.

She joined the A&M International faculty in 1994, after 17 years on the faculty of the Schol of Nursing at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston.

She continues to serve as an adjunct associate professor at UTMB, as well as a Visiting Professor in Psychiatric-Mental Health Nursing at the Schools of Nursing of the University of Sao Paulo at Ribeirao Preto and the Federal University of Minas Gerais, Belo Horizonte, Brazil.

She has served on the editorial board of Revista Latinoamericana de Enfermagem since 1993 and has numerous publication credits in journals such as the Journal of Transcultural Nursing, Medical Humanities Review, Nurse Educator and Anais do Segundo SiBracen, among others.

Her professional affiliations include the American Nurses' Association, Texas Nurses Association, Sigma Theta Tau, National Council for International Health, American Public Health Association, Society for Education and Research in Psychiatric Nursing and the Laredo Organization of Nurse Executives.

She serves on Advisory Boards for Primary Health Care Services for Webb County Colonia, the Children's International Advocacy Center of Webb County, and the Laredo Community College Department of Nursing. She serves as tobacco control coordinator and vice chair of the public affairs committee of the American Heart Association. Other board service is provided the Laredo Interagency Gang Task Force; Laredo Immunization Coalition and Laredo Children's Access to Child Health (CATCH).

She also serves on The Texas A&M University System's Task Force on Campus Drugs and Violence, Task Force on Domestic Violence and the Task Force on The Texas A&M University Health Science Center.
