A&M International Professor's Essay Included in Brown University's "Novel"

An essay by Texas A&M International University Assistant Professor of English Alicia Carroll will be included in Brown University's prestigious journal Novel: A Forum on Fiction.

Dr. Carroll's essay, "The Giaour's Campaign: Desire and the Other in Felix Holt: The Radical," will appear in the (Fall, Spring, Winter) edition of the journal dedicated to articles and reviews of history, theory and critical studies of fiction.

While Eliot's novels of English life often touch on the outer limits of empire, Carroll's essay maintains that Eliot's Felix Holt creates a dialogue between otherness and desire that is mediated by a presence that is itself neither fully English nor authentically Eastern.

The essay notes that the narrator, herself an outsider or other, paradoxically cyphers conflict between the perceived empire and the "English life" she represents.

Carroll, who joined the A&M International faculty in 1995, holds a Ph.D. in English from the Graduate Center of the City University of New York. Her area of concentration is Victorian literature . Her M.A. in English and Comparative Literature was earned at Columbia University. Her B.A. in English was received from Skidmore College.

An alumna of the Dickens Project at the University of Southern California-Santa Cruz, she worked as the editorial assistant for the scholarly journal Dickens Studies Annual: Essays in Victorian Literature.

Her essays on Victorian literature have also appeared in Nineteenth Century Literature and The Carlyle Annual.

She is currently completing a book on George Eliot and Victorian multiculturalism.
