Texas A&M International University's Office of Continuing Education invites educators and professionals to submit course proposals for the Summer Children's Workshop, for 1st-6th graders, and Summer Academy, for 7th-11th graders to be held at the University June 23 - July 18.

Oscar J. Munoz, Continuing Education Director at A&M International, said educators and professionals who have innovative ideas for teaching exciting topics are ideal instructors for the summer programs.

"Both the Summer Children's Workshop and the Summer Academy were developed to provide young people with a variety of fun, eye-opening, mind-expanding learning experiences. In previous years, our instructors have reflected the programs' philosophy that learning is an exciting opportunity. This year's instructors should also reflect the programs' learning philosophy and high educational standards," Munoz said.

Persons who wish to submit course proposals may contact Munoz at 326-2700 or via email at ojmunoz@tamiu.edu.

Submitted proposals should include a synopsis for a course which can be taught to three different grade groups, 1st - 2nd grade, 3rd - 4th grade, and 5th - 6th grade, for the Summer Children's Workshop, or two grade groups, 7th - 8th and 9th - 11th, for the Summer Academy.

Proposals should also include detailed lesson plans for each grade group and material lists with cost estimates.

Courses for both the Summer Children's Workshop and Summer Academy are taught Monday - Friday in a one-hour format for each grade level.

Munoz encourages proposals to incorporate the use of the state-of the-art facilities available at A&M International's growing campus.

"We have made a special effort to capitalize on our new campus and the amenities it affords us, such as our computer labs with Internet access, the science labs, classroom facilities, and our spacious grounds. The recently completed Kinesiology and Convocation Building should also allow us to explore new learning opportunities this year," he noted.

Munoz added that although the majority of Summer Children's Workshop and Summer Academy instructors are professional educators, course proposals from other professionals are also welcome.

"One of our most successful courses was a visual arts course taught by a professional photographer. Another creative class was taught by a professional artist," he explained.

Past course offerings for the Summer Children's Workshop include beginning computers, arts and crafts, math and science, theater arts, children's literature, music, and cooperative sports.

Past course offerings for the Summer Academy include Internet exploration, sculpture, computer training, forensics, hypnosis, environmental analysis, library science, parapsychology, SAT math preparation, chess, and German language lessons.
