A four hour ethics program that targets the needs of Certified Public Accountants (CPAs), is set to be offered this Summer at Texas A&M International University.

Dr. Willie Cargill, Associate Professor of Accounting and Information Systems in the University's College of Business Administration, was notified recently that the Texas State Board of Public Accountancy has approved the course, paving the way for its presentation this summer.

Cargill and Dr. Wayne Hayenga of The Texas A&M University System Extension Service, among the State's approved instructors, co-authored the program. The program is one of only a handful approved by the Board.

Those holding the CPA certification are required to complete such a ethics program once every three years. For local and regional CPAs, this often means traveling long distances to complete course requirements.

The local availability of the program should do much to address regional needs for continuing certification for accountants.

Cargill and Hayenga also plan to capitalize on Texas A&M International University's participation in the Trans-Texas Televideo Network (TTVN) by offering the course by distance learning to some 15 isolated locations across the State. The program will also be available as part of the Texas A&M Agricultural Extension Service Education Foundation's annual offerings for CPAs.

A member of the College of Business Administration's faculty since 1989, Cargill holds his Ph.D. in Accountancy from the University of Missouri-Columbia. His MBA in Banking and Finance was earned at the University of North Texas. He also holds a BBA in Accountancy from UNT. Certified as a CPA by the State of Texas, he also is a licensed real estate broker.
