A&M International Professor Selected for Fulbright Scholar Program

A member of the Texas A&M International University College of Business Administration faculty has been selected for the prestigious Fulbright Scholar Program administered by the United States Information Agency (USIA).

Dr. Mazhar M. Islam, Associate Professor of Economics and Finance, will conduct an empirical study on privatization, financial and capital markets reforms, foreign investment and the economic development of Bangladesh that will include travel and lectures at public and private institutions there.

According to its 1961 authorization, the Fulbright Program is targeted at "enabling the government of the United States to increase mutual understanding between the people of the U.S. and the people of other countries...and thus assist in the development of friendly, sympathetic and peaceful relations between the United States and other countries of the world."

Funding for the Program is derived from an annual appropriation made by Congress to the USIA. Participating governments and host institutions also provide support.

Dr. Islam, a member of the University's faculty since 1990, recently presented a paper and served as a panelist on a session on Free Trade Agreement of Americas (FTAA): "Restoring U.S. Leadership in FTAA" at the Annual Meeting of the Business Association of Latin American Studies (BALAS) in Rio de Janeiro.

He will shortly present a second paper at the Annual Meeting of the Global Finance Association (GFA) in Montreal exploring short-term and long-term linkages of stock market price index of the seven largest equity markets in Western Hemisphere.

Islam recently authored "Problems and Prospects of Investing in the Mexican Bolsa: Evidence from Pre and Post Devaluation Era," which has appeared in the Journal of Business and Society. He has published numerous research papers in other national and international journals.

He received his Ph.D. and M.A. in Economics from Vanderbilt University. He also holds a B.A. and M.A. in Economics from the University of Dhaka.

Prior to joining A&M International, he was an Assistant Professor at the State University of New York at Fredonia, New York.
