Global Opportunities '97 Scheduled at A&M International

Texas A&M International students and alumni looking for jobs or career information should mark their calendars for "Global Opportunities '97,"a day-long career fair scheduled Tuesday, April 15 from 12 noon to 6 p.m. in the Kinesiology Building.

The event is sponsored by A&M International's Office of Career Planning and Placement, and will bring together over 90 potential employers.

"It's a great opportunity for our students and our alumni to consider new careers, assess their current careers, or perhaps begin to consider augmenting their career skills with a graduate degree. The best part is that they can accomplish all of this in one location with no travel or expense to them at times convenient to them," said Viky Garcia, Director of the University's Office of Career Planning and Placement.

The event is free of charge. Students and graduates interested in attending should contact the Office of Career Planning and Placement for additional information at 326-2260.

Garcia said that, as the event's name hints, opportunities for university graduates are no longer local, regional or even national.

"The village is global and so is the workplace. A&M International students and graduates can take their degree and find employment anywhere in the world," she affirmed, "Our over 6000 graduates can be found in countries around the world and just around the corner."

Despite corporate downsizing and outsourcing, career options continue to brigthen for persons holding undergraduate or graduate degrees, Garcia said.

"Employers continue to recognize the relevance of a university degree to their field and are seeking out qualified candidates who present with a diversity of skills and problem-solving abilities. The undergraduate degree remains the key to entry level management and supervisory positions," Garcia said.

She noted that individuals holding additional specializations that target developing technologies and computer applications appear to have a distinct advantage in the workplace. "There is a tremendous interest in applicants who are prepared to move beyond the new electronic frontier and have computer skills and capabilities. We continue to see career opportunities in education, private industry, research and others," she explained.

The 90-plus firms and 145 representatives attending Global Opportunities '97 include retail outlets, education districts, state offices and agencies and non-profit organizations.
