A visiting team of evaluators from the National League for Nursing Accreditation Commission (NLNAC) has recommended that Texas A&M International University's Dr F. M. Canseco School of Nursing receive the organization's maximum five-year Initial Accreditation.

University president Dr. J. Charles Jennett said the recommendation for accreditation sends a clear signal about the program's quality.

"This is a clear indicator of the appropriateness and outstanding quality of our program. The remarkably short and successful history of this program has been secured by the steady commitment and determination of the Canseco School of Nursing faculty and by the strong support of the community we so proudly serve," Dr. Jennett said.

The three-day visit and evaluation was made by Dr. Veta Massey of Brenau University in Gainesvile, Georgia and Dr. Sheila Green of Tennessee Technological University in Cookevile, Tenn.

Dr. Susan Baker, recently appointed as Director of the Canseco School of Nursing, said the visiting team was impressed with the support given the School by the University and particularly by the community.

"The team was astounded that we had come so far in such a short time and commended the University for its support of the School and for the generosity provided by the community such as that given by the Canseco family and the Lamar Bruni Vergara Trust.

"The first day of the team's visit, they were able to join us for the formal dedication ceremonies for Canseco Hall, which houses the School. They had never participated in a site visit that included the dedication of a new building to house the nursing program being reviewed. They were much taken with the hospitality and warmth they were shown throughout their visit," Dr. Baker said.

The National League For Nursing's accreditation program is founded on the belief that specialized accreditation provides for the maintenance and enhancement of educational quality, program improvement, and contributes to the centrality of nursing for the public good.

The achievement of accreditation indicates to the general public and to the educational community that a nursing program has clear and appropriate educational objectives and is providing the conditions under which its objectives can be fulfilled, according to the NLNAC.

The NLNAC is the entity within the National League for Nursing (NLN) that is responsible for the accreditation of nursing education schools and programs. The NLNAC governing body is composed of articulate leaders representing nursing education, nursing service administration and the public.

The Commission, separate and independent of NLN, both administratively and financially, has the sole authority and accountability for carrying out the responsibilities inherent in the accreditation process.

The Canseco School of Nursing, established in 1995, currently offers an RN completion Bachelor's degree that utilizes a unique transcultural nursing model. It is currently developing a Master of Science in Nursing.
