Texas A&M International University's Office of Continuing Education wants to hear from teenagers who wish to volunteer as student assistants for the University's upcoming Children's Summer Workshop, for 1st-6th graders, and Summer Academy, for 7th-11th graders.

Teenagers who are mature, dependable, and eager to help other students learn, are ideal candidates for the volunteer positions, said Oscar J. Munoz, Continuing Education Director at A&M International.

"This is a wonderful opportunity for teens to help others, gain experience, and learn new skills. The primary responsibilities of the student assistants are to make sure program participants get to and from class and to assist program instructors," Munoz said.

Volunteer student assistants must be at least 16 years old, have parental consent, and must be able to attend a one-day training session and either the Children's Summer Workshop or Summer Academy.

Both four-week summer programs will be held at the University's main campus weekdays from June 23 - July 18, with classes dismissed July 4 for the Independence Day holiday.

The Children's Summer Workshop will be held in the mornings from 8 am - 12 noon, and the Summer Academy will be held in the afternoons from 12 noon - 5 pm.

Course offerings for the Children's Summer Workshop include Computer Whizz, Non-Competitive Co-Op Sports, FUNdamentals of Cheerleading, Tall Tales: Publish a Book, Charm and Etiquette for Girls, Call of the Wild: Adventures in Science, Scrap Book Design, Figure It Out: Math Fun, and Artistic Hodgepodge.

Summer Academy course offerings include, for 7th - 8th graders, Who Dunit?: Forensics; Creative Sculpture; Understanding Self Through Hypnosis; Internet for Fun and Research; Co-ed Basketball; PSAT Math Preparation; Theater Antics; and English Grammar: In Plain English; and, for 9th - 11th graders, Internet Home Page Design on Macintosh; Understanding Self Through Hypnosis; Verbal Power: ACT/SAT Grammar/Vocabulary Review; Who Dunit?: Forensics; Creative Sculpture; SAT Preparation--Computer Interactive; Drawing; Theater Antics; ACT/SAT Math Preparation; Computer Graphics; and Co-ed Basketball.
