A&M International Officials Elated with Funding News

Responding to preliminary reports from Austin that the Texas Legislature has targeted over $35 million for Texas A&M International University's completion, University officials say they are elated with the news.

"While we realize that the conference committee is recommending these amounts and House, Senate and the Governor's approval remain, we can't help but be extremely pleased with the funding level," said University president Dr. J. Charles Jennett.

In addition to the $35 million in tuition revenue bonds to fund construction of the campus' completion, $4.5 million will fund completion of the University's Sue and Radcliffe Killam Library. Additionally, formula funding of the University's basic budget, not including special items, is expected to be boosted approximately $3 million.

"This is a clear testament to the bold and visionary leadership demonstrated by our legislative leaders Senator Zaffirini and Representative Cuellar. This took a team effort including the work of Representative Tracey King, the legislative staff, the University's faculty and staff and, of course, the citizens of Laredo," Jennett said.

"We couldn't have asked for better representation for the University," he continued, "they have stayed the course in difficult times and will make it possible for us to continue to build a great University for the 21st Century and beyond. The students of today and tomorrow have benefited from some extraordinary champions of higher education."

Jennett said the massive private and public support the University has received and the students' willingness to vote themselves a student center fee impressed the members of the Legislature.

"I believe they were impressed by the tremendous amount of support this University has been able to secure. Any time a publicly funded entity can show such support, it is indicative of perceived need and importance to the service area. We are most fortunate to have this support and we will continue to aggressively pursue it," he said.

Praising the efforts of local legislators and members of the community of supporters, Jennett also noted the hard work and dedication of the University's students, faculty and staff that combine to make the University a special place to learn, work and grow.

"It's an exciting time for all of us at A&M International. Everyday, we add another chapter to a growing history," he said.
