Members of the Laredo Association for Human Resource Management (LAHRM) ventured onto the information superhighway for their May meeting recently at Texas A&M International University.

The 40-plus member group was hosted for its luncheon and meeting by A&M International's Office of Human Resources which sponsored a noon lunch in the Great Room of the Sue and Radcliffe Killam Library.

After the business meeting/luncheon members of the University's Office of Human Resources provided a computerized demonstration of the University's Home Page and Office of Human Resources web site as well as other sites of interest to human resource professionals. Following the demonstration, a campus tour was provided.

Elizabeth N. Martinez, Director of Human Resources for the University, said the afternoon offered local LAHRM members a hands-on opportunity to see how on-line technology can benefit the human resource function.

"The University now posts all job announcements and human resources news on-line via Home Page access. This widens our employee recruitment reach and provides us with an expanded presence that could only be duplicated by expensive advertising efforts. In addition, our online presence allows us to receive inquiries by email and can speed applicant processing. The University investment in technology has helped to streamline the human resources function and we believe on-line access is the new standard most human resources offices will embrace within the next five years," she said.

The group's tour of the campus included the recently dedicated Phase II complex and the University's Academic Enrichment Center's state-of- the-art computer lab. The group was also updated on continuing education opportunities and professional development options.
