A&M International HR Director Earns Professional Certification

Texas A&M International University's Director of Human Resources, Elizabeth N. Martinez, has earned certification as a Professional in Human Resources (PHR).

The certification, awarded by the Human Resources Certification Institute (HCRI) signifies that Martinez possesses the theoretical knowledge and practical experience in human resource management necessary to pass a rigorous examination demonstrating a mastery of the body of knowledge in the field.

"Certification as a human resource professional clearly demonstrates a firm commitment to personal excellence and to the human resource profession," said Michael R. Losey, SPRH, president and CEO of the Society for Human Resource Management (SCHRM).

Joe Garcia, Vice President for Finance and Administration at A&M International, said Martinez' accomplishment is indicative of her dedication to her field.

"Ms. Martinez is a true professional who continues to contribute greatly to the overall success of the University. We commend her on this success and believe her accreditation sets a new standard for HR professionals in our area," Garcia said.

Martinez began her career with the then-Laredo State University in 1980 after completing her BBA from the University. Her experience at the University has spanned from purchasing clerk and assistant business manager to her current position as Director of Human Resources, a post she has held since 1987.

In 1994, she received the University's Outstanding Employee Service Award for Administrative Staff. She serves on a number of University and Texas A&M University System committees and is chair of the System Employees Benefits Advisory Committee.

She is also associated with the Laredo Association of Human Resources Management (LAHRM) and served as that group's president in 1991. She currently serves as chair of the group's professional development and certification committee.

A member of the University's Alumni Association, she is a former president of the group.

She is married to Mario E. Martinez, local rancher and retailer. The couple have two children, twins Rebecca and Mario Jr.

HRCI awards two levels of certification: PHR and SPHR, Senior Professional in Human Resources. To be certified as a PHR, the applicant must pass a comprehensive examination and have at least four years of professional HR exempt level experience or a combination of professional experience and education.

The HCRI, based in Alexandria, Va., is the credentialing body for human resources professionals and is affiliated with the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM), the world's largest organization dedicated exclusively to the human resource profession. The Institute's purpose is to promote the establishment of professional standards and to recognize professional who meet those standards.
