Citing a need to communicate the numerous programs available to finance higher education for all students, Texas A&M International University officials have launched a service series of financial assistance workshops for parents and students.

Texas A&M International University Dean of Student Affairs Dr. Stephen Brown said the University hopes to help local and area high school graduates become aware of the numerous assistance programs available.

"In recent weeks, Laredo's high school graduate population has grown considerably and many graduates are now considering pursuing a four-year degree, but are worried about financing the most important and lasting investment in their lives. These workshops will provide solid answers about grants, scholarships, campus work opportunities and loans," said Dr. Brown.

Brown noted the University has recently made available over $130,000 in additional scholarship monies for new and transfer undergraduate students. The University has awarded over $300,000 in scholarships from 1996-1997.

"With the addition of these monies and the way Pell Grants have been redefined, a tremendous number of students will find that their expenses are considerably reduced," Brown explained.

The workshops will be held in Canseco Hall Room 101 at 3 and 6 p.m. on Wednesday, June 11, Wednesday, June 18 and Monday, June 23.

Those attending the workshops will be assisted with completing financial aid forms, will be able to search a database for national scholarships using "Fund Finder," apply for over $89,000 in Fall 1997 scholarships and use the FAFSA Express form to shorten financial aid processing.
